About the position

The Engineering Technician III - Non-Residential Use Permit (RUP) Coordinator plays a crucial role in the Land Development Services department of Fairfax County. This position involves providing technical interpretations and evaluations of construction documents in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and departmental policies. The coordinator is responsible for reviewing and processing architectural drawings, communicating development regulations, and serving as a subject matter expert for non-RUP processes. The role also includes managing customer inquiries, advising on inspection results, and ensuring compliance with safety programs and guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical interpretations and evaluate construction documents according to the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.
  • Review and process architectural drawings for the issuance of commercial certificates of occupancy or non-Residential Use Permits.
  • Communicate development regulations to contractors, builders, engineers, and the public.
  • Support the Elevator and Cross Connection Control Program.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for customer inquiries via email and telephone.
  • Advise customers on non-RUP processes and inspection results, providing possible solutions and next steps.
  • Comply with the Library of Virginia retention schedule for inspection-related records.
  • Provide backup support for other divisions within the Building Division and other areas of LDS.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent plus four years of engineering technical support work.
  • Thorough knowledge in the practical application of engineering science and technology.
  • Ability to comprehend and comply with safety practices.
  • Ability to prepare accurate drawings and maps.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Expert knowledge and experience of the Planning and Land Use System (PLUS).
  • Experience in project management within building construction and/or code application.
  • Experience in problem solving, team environments, and critical thinking.
  • Experience in Land Development processes and reading construction documents.
  • Experience in professional writing or creating reports.
