About the position

The Engineering Technician III position at Terracon involves performing field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of various construction materials, including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. The technician will communicate effectively with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, and contractors regarding project requirements and testing results. Responsibilities include transporting material samples to the laboratory for further analysis, tabulating and preparing data for daily reports, and maintaining equipment and work areas. The role requires adherence to strict safety standards and may involve assisting with the scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites. In this position, the technician will perform testing, observation, and inspection as directed, ensuring compliance with training and specified procedures. Clear documentation of findings and results is essential, along with basic data analysis to verify accuracy before submission to the Project Manager. The technician should have experience and proficiency in multiple areas of field testing and inspection or laboratory testing, and may also be responsible for training lower-level technicians or leading activities on larger projects. Maintaining equipment and calibration, following safety rules, and reporting any safety issues are critical components of the role. The technician will be responsible for maintaining quality standards across all projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field and/or laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials.
  • Communicate with project manager, engineering technicians, client representatives, and contractors regarding project requirements and testing results.
  • Transport material samples to the laboratory for further testing and analysis.
  • Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in written and digital reports for daily transmittal to the Project Manager.
  • Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas.
  • Assist with scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites as needed.
  • Adhere to strict safety standards and perform pre-task planning prior to executing work.
  • Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Maintain quality standards on all projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience or equivalent training and related experience.
  • Experience with laptop computer use and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • ACI certification in one or more areas: Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, Concrete Strength Testing Technician, Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
  • American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or relevant certifications in structural steel and/or nondestructive testing services.

Nice-to-haves

  • NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in categories such as Asphalt, Concrete, Soils.
  • NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in categories like Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist.
  • ICC certification in categories such as Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel - Bolting, Structural Steel - Welding.
  • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in multiple areas including Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
