About the position

You will serve as an Engineering Technician in the Mechanical Shop (Code 931), Production Resources Department, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine. This position is a temporary promotion, not to exceed one year, with the possibility of becoming permanent without further competition. As an Engineering Technician, your primary responsibility will be to analyze engineered drawings to assess the feasibility of manufacturing components using computer numerical control (CNC) equipment. You will utilize computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology to develop CNC programs for the manufacturing of production components and shop tooling, such as jigs and fixtures, necessary to complete production work. In this role, you will review previous programs to determine if a program has already been created or if there is one similar in nature that can be adapted to current specifications. You will also use modeling software to create a three-dimensional representation of the part and develop a program for the part to be machined on CNC machine tools when no previous programs exist for the part. Additionally, you will maintain and update programs and drawings to satisfy any design changes imposed by the engineering division. Your guidance will be essential for machinists, machine tool operators, and trainees on the safe and accurate operation of the program and various CNC machines. Moreover, you will assist with estimates for the cost of manufacturing production parts as well as fixtures, jigs, molds, and tooling, considering labor, material, cycle time, and tooling costs. This position requires a strong understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and practices, particularly as they relate to CNC systems and manufacturing processes.
