About the position

The Engineering Technician at the University of Kansas will be responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining laboratory equipment, including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and software programming. This role supports the NSF Engineering Research Center - Environmentally Applied Refrigerant Technology Hub (EARTH) and involves collaboration with engineers to enhance research processes and product development.

Responsibilities

  • Design, construct, and maintain experimental equipment including mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems.
  • Model testing apparatus using Fusion 360.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctioning lab equipment.
  • Assist engineers in creating products and improving research processes.
  • Perform research builds, prototype inspections, and product evaluations under the direction of lead engineers.
  • Install, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Install electrical equipment such as relays and solenoids for experiments.
  • Use microcontrollers to build test equipment.
  • Program tests using LabView or Python and run tests to correct issues within the programs.
  • Extract and manage data from test programs using Excel, sending data to engineers for analysis.
  • Conduct pre-test analysis to determine program needs and develop programs based on testing requirements.
  • Support lead researchers as needed, including coordinating shipments of research materials and conducting monthly assessments of gas and chemical inventory.
  • Decontaminate labs after experiments and provide support to the Wonderful Institute for Sustainable Engineering.
  • Attend safety meetings, joint lab group meetings, and project meetings with industry partners.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience with design and construction of laboratory experimental apparatus, instrumentation and controls, and programming.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Two years of experience with LabView software.
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent time management skills and experience prioritizing workflow.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $55,000-$65,000.
  • Work schedule from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
