About the position

The Engineering Technician position within the Fire Research Division of the Department of Commerce focuses on reducing the impact of fires through experimental research. The role involves enhancing firefighter safety, developing models for building fire performance assessment, and advancing measurement science to minimize fire hazards. The technician will work in various settings, including small labs and field research, contributing to the safety and effectiveness of firefighting efforts and protecting communities from fire risks.

Responsibilities

  • Participate as a creative member of an engineering or technology team.
  • Perform tasks related to the preparation and fabrication of experimental apparatuses and test fixtures using manufacturing processes such as forming, machining, and joining.
  • Construct building mock-ups and install various sensors on test specimens, buildings, apparatuses, and fixtures.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and development of systems, technical equipment, instruments, and/or software.
  • Carry out experimental testing based on supervisory-defined objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Follow health, safety, and environmental guidelines and procedures to improve the safety of the work environment.
  • Provide technical support on assigned projects through the application of professional knowledge and skills in engineering practices.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-04 grade level in the Federal service, or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology.
  • For ZT-III level, at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-08 grade level in the Federal service, or two full years of graduate education or a master's degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in fabricating and assembling complex devices and mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Experience working in a team to resolve technical challenges.
