About the position

The Engineering Technician position is designed to provide essential engineering support for construction and maintenance projects across various County departments. This role involves utilizing engineering principles to assist in the design and execution of public infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with specifications and regulations while also engaging with the community to address concerns and inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Draft plans for small or routine construction and maintenance projects and contribute to the design of larger, more complex projects related to public infrastructure.
  • Prepare plans, skilled engineering drawings, specifications, details, maps, plats, and other displays for engineering projects using GPS, GIS, and CADD software.
  • Perform engineering calculations utilizing broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices; calculate ratios, volumes, angles, grades, construction quantities, and other project components as needed.
  • Compile, study, and analyze a variety of engineering and operational data in support of County infrastructure.
  • Participate in field and topography surveys for design assignments and to stake/field layout design components for construction projects.
  • Assess road conditions and determine corrective measures needed to repair or resurface the roads.
  • Inspect construction to ensure adherence to designs and project specifications per work site.
  • Conduct various field studies and visit sites to assess and resolve infrastructure and construction problems.
  • Review various operations for compliance with permits and environmental regulations.
  • Provide engineering support for capital projects and support to project managers.
  • Develop construction specifications and review contractor specifications for compliance with established rules and regulations.
  • Organize bid proposals and calculate cost estimates; prepare contract documents for projects and all required permitting.
  • Review materials, labor, and equipment costs to verify accuracy; provide technical guidance for construction as required.
  • Provide customer service pertaining to engineering services; meet with professional design consultants.
  • Organize public outreach and develop information for distribution; draft letters and mass mailings for explanations of upcoming projects.
  • Respond to construction inquiries and citizen concerns, inquiries, and complaints.
  • Update and maintain both electronic and hardcopy records of daily department operations.

Requirements

  • Broad knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
  • Experience with GPS, GIS, and CADD software.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and prepare cost estimates.
  • Experience in field surveys and construction inspections.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with the public.
