The Laboratory Chemist position at Avon Protection is integral to the APS Filters Laboratory, which focuses on testing related to Avon’s respiratory protection products. This role supports both the production of filters and the research and development of innovative respiratory protection solutions. The Laboratory Chemist will be responsible for conducting advanced measurements of toxic gases and simulants, utilizing their expertise in chemistry and chemical analytical methods to ensure the safety, accuracy, and efficiency of laboratory testing processes. In this role, the Laboratory Chemist will perform gas protection time testing on filters and sorbent materials, which is crucial for both production and R&D efforts. They will engage in calibration activities for various analytical instruments, including gas chromatography (GC), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, chemiluminescence, electrochemical sensors, and mass flow units. The chemist will also prepare chemicals and agents for testing, ensuring proper neutralization of reagents and waste to maintain laboratory safety standards. The position requires performing analytical measurements on materials, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and working with a variety of toxic chemicals and gases, solvents, acids, and bases, all while adhering to Safety Datasheet requirements. The Laboratory Chemist will make recommendations regarding gas detectors and other instruments based on their analytical techniques and chemistry knowledge. They will also participate in Statistical Process Control (SPC) activities, performing control measurements and identifying any out-of-control conditions. Collaboration is key in this role, as the Laboratory Chemist will work closely with scientific staff and the Laboratory Systems Engineer to create and update testing procedures, inventory management, and safety protocols. Effective communication is essential, as the chemist will be responsible for generating verbal and written reports on test data, including charts and graphs to convey findings clearly. Additionally, they will need to understand military and commercial filter specifications, including test conditions and quality limits for filter media. The Laboratory Chemist will investigate the chemical compatibility of materials and instrument components, support the production and R&D teams with their knowledge of chemical reactions and interactions, and learn all applicable laboratory quality control procedures and policies. Routine laboratory tasks such as housekeeping, washing glassware, and performing physical tests will also be part of their responsibilities. The chemist will actively participate in lab SQUID (Safety, Quality, Utilization, Inventory, and Delivery) meetings, maintaining assigned metrics and reporting on them during meetings. Database entry of test results and other assigned duties will complete their role.
