About the position

The Engineering Trainee/Assistant Engineer position at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) is a full-time, permanent role designed for individuals looking to start their careers in civil engineering. This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), which allows for non-competitive appointments for qualified candidates. The role is based in Long Island City, Queens, and involves a structured traineeship leading to the Assistant Engineer title after successful completion of the required qualifications and experience. As an Engineer Trainee, you will work under the supervision of higher-level engineers and managers, engaging in various engineering assignments that focus on the design and construction of infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, and buildings. Your responsibilities will include providing technical expertise to support the Department's construction and maintenance programs, conducting laboratory and field tests, preparing reports, and performing field inspections. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation systems in New York State. Upon advancement to the Assistant Engineer level, you will take on more complex engineering duties, including project management for new or rehabilitated infrastructure, reviewing plans and estimates from consultants and contractors, and recommending effective construction methods and safety systems. This position also requires participation in the Incident Command System to assist in emergency response efforts, highlighting the importance of this role in public safety and infrastructure resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering assignments related to the design of highways, bridges, buildings, and other facilities under supervision.
  • Provide technical expertise to the Department's construction and maintenance programs.
  • Conduct laboratory and field tests using instrumentation and data acquisition equipment.
  • Evaluate and analyze data from tests and inspections.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations based on findings.
  • Conduct field inspections and collect field data for analysis.
  • Assist in the design and construction of infrastructure projects, including roads and bridges.
  • Review consultant and contractor plans and estimates for projects.
  • Recommend construction methods and safety systems for transportation projects.
  • Participate in the Incident Command System for emergency response.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) with one year of full-time engineering experience.
  • For Assistant Engineer, proof of passing the NCEES FE and a qualifying bachelor's degree or one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience is required.
  • Qualifying degrees include Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and others as specified.
  • One year of full-time engineering experience in the design and construction of parks, roads, bridges, or treatment facilities.
