About the position

The English as a Second Language Instructor position is designed to assist non-native English-speaking students in developing the complex language skills and content knowledge necessary for civic engagement, career advancement, and career readiness. The instructor will provide educational and English language instruction tailored to various learning styles and aligned with English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education.

Responsibilities

  • Provides educational and English language instruction using teaching methods designed for a variety of learning styles and abilities.
  • Assists students in developing an understanding of the function and form of the English language using English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS).
  • Utilizes a wide range of teaching strategies based on student assessment results.
  • Provides contextualized instruction that includes technology and job employability skills.
  • Uses course texts, outlines, syllabi, and other curriculum materials in accordance with program and state standards.
  • Participates in curriculum development and program improvement activities.
  • Remains current in instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records according to federal, state, and program guidelines.
  • Participates in departmental recruitment and retention initiatives and special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • One year of teaching, tutoring, or training experience in a secondary, postsecondary, or corporate training environment preferred.
  • Specific experience with online instruction and educational technology is preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and the unique needs of English-language learners (ELLs).
  • Experience and proficiency in using technology and the internet in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to display empathy and positive regard for others.
