About the position

The Financial Accountant I position at CalSTRS is part of the Financial Planning, Accounting, & Reporting Division, focusing on cost accounting and financial reporting. The role involves maintaining accounting frameworks, performing complex cost analysis, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles. The ideal candidate will contribute to performance management and operational control by analyzing financial data and implementing system enhancements.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex and specialized cost accounting, research, analysis, and reporting.
• Maintain an accounting and allocation framework to measure, allocate, and report financial and statistical data.
• Extract, analyze, and present financial data to drive improvement in performance management and financial reporting.
• Act independently as a subject matter expert for the organizational management and personnel administration module within BusinessDirect.
• Research, analyze, and design business process improvements; implement system enhancements and modifications.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Public Administration, or a similar technical field.
• Experience developing or utilizing cost accounting and cost allocation methodologies and practices.
• Experience extracting data from ERP and/or IT systems and categorizing, formatting, and reporting data.
• Experience performing organizational management and personnel administration tasks in an Enterprise Resource Planning system.
• Knowledge of and experience with governmental accounting and budgeting.
• Advanced Excel skills and demonstrated application of expertise.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with all levels of staff and management.
• Ability to establish strong working relationships across the organization with technical staff, project managers, and business area subject matter experts.
• Ability to take initiative and work independently.
