About the position

The Enterprise Data Governance Engineer will play a crucial role in developing and implementing an enterprise-level data governance framework aimed at identifying, classifying, and tracking sensitive and confidential data across the organization. This position is essential for establishing a robust data governance discipline that aligns with the organization's strategic goals. The engineer will be responsible for creating and maintaining a comprehensive data catalog repository that includes data sources, data flows, data owners, and data stewards. This repository will serve as a foundational tool for ensuring data integrity and compliance throughout the organization. In addition to the catalog, the engineer will develop tools and processes that maintain a common, enterprise-wide data standard. This includes implementing norms for the creation and maintenance of data catalogs and establishing an inventory of data assets. A significant aspect of the role involves developing a data classification process that categorizes data based on sensitivity and confidentiality levels. The engineer will also assist in designing and developing data architecture maps or data flow diagrams, which are essential for visualizing data processes and ensuring clarity in data governance practices. The position requires active monitoring of external trends and best practices in data governance, allowing the engineer to define relevant data use cases for the organization. Collaboration with various departments, including information security, legal, risk, and compliance, is vital to ensure that data governance processes are effectively coordinated and adhered to. The engineer will also support the technology used to build and maintain the enterprise data catalog, ensuring that it is utilized effectively by data stewards and data owners.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an enterprise-level data governance framework.
  • Create and maintain a data catalog repository of data sources, data flows, data owners, and data stewards.
  • Establish and ensure adherence to data governance policies, programs, and practices.
  • Develop tools and processes for maintaining a common enterprise-wide data standard.
  • Implement norms for the creation and maintenance of common data catalogs.
  • Establish an inventory of data assets (Data Catalog).
  • Develop a data classification process.
  • Assist in designing and developing data architecture maps or data flow diagrams.
  • Develop management and board-level reporting on data governance processes.
  • Coordinate data governance processes with information security, legal, risk, and compliance processes.
  • Monitor external trends and best practices for data governance and define data use cases for the organization.
  • Support technology used to build and maintain an enterprise data catalog.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 2-4 years' experience in Metadata management and/or enterprise information governance or data governance in a major services organization.
  • Experience with large-scale data projects or as part of an enterprise task-force responsible for governance areas.
  • Data curation/stewardship skills to understand and classify data in a database.
  • Experience as a system admin, including application administration and configuring user groups.
  • Ability to create simple SQL queries and navigate SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Experience applying industry standard best practices for Information and Data Governance.
  • Demonstrated consulting skills, including change management concepts and strategies.
  • Knowledge of data governance or information governance technology solutions.
