About the position

As the nation's first statewide, "transmission only" company, VELCO manages the safe, reliable, cost-effective transmission of electric power throughout Vermont and as a part of the integrated New England regional network. The Senior Network Engineer provides enterprise technical engineering and support, as well as management of network and project based activities. With minimum oversight, you'll work in collaboration with the Telecommunications team and stakeholders, and are responsible for the design, implementation, and administration of the enterprise server environment adhering to compliance and security requirements. This role is hybrid and will require 2 days/week on our Rutland, Vermont campus.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the technical activities of a telecommunication systems administration support team.
  • Maintain infrastructure that is essential and relied upon on a 7x24 basis.
  • Perform complex network design and planning and integration support functions, such as troubleshooting, analysis, research, debugging and problem solving.
  • Apply in-depth and diversified knowledge of carrier class telecommunication engineering practices and standards in system designs and operation.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of telecommunication transport technologies.
  • Operate and maintain high capacity optical transport systems, microwave systems, and land mobile radio networks (if applicable).
  • Design, manage, and operate complex private packet switched communication networks (CES, IP routing, DNS, Security, VPN, etc.).
  • Manage and operate TDM digital cross connect systems in a multivendor environment.
  • Manage a Network Operating Center monitoring TDM, Carrier Ethernet, and proprietary networks using SNMP monitoring tools.
  • Monitor and conduct trend analysis for telecommunication networks to proactively identify performance issues ensuring highest availability of critical networks.
  • Provide engineering and technical support to field personnel at radio sites, distribution utilities and substations throughout the State of Vermont; travel required.
  • Conduct field assessments as necessary to plan and manage substation and mountain top radio site projects.
  • Complete assigned projects within required timeframe.
  • Create a multisite RF propagation plan and analysis.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of FCC licensing and requirements.
  • Collaborate with and support all members of the Telecommunications Group.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Direct work of junior staff members, provides mentoring and guidance.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in information technology or networking is highly desirable; an equivalent combination of education and experience, such as an Associate's Degree in Telecommunications or IT with 7+ years of experience may be considered.
  • CCNA or CCNP certifications are a plus.
  • Thorough understanding of analog and digital voice communications and standards.
  • Extensive experience with network security, firewalling, related protocol analysis and SNMP is desirable.
  • High proficiency at planning, designing, implementing and managing carrier class statistical (IP) and TDM networking with consideration of traffic loading and bandwidth allocation is essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with mountain top wireless and substation communications practices including grounding, isolation, and protection.
  • Ability to clearly present complex technical information to committees, management, external regulators and industry associations.

  • Annual salary range for this position is $101,000 to $142,000 but most offers will fall between $101,000-$122,000.
