About the position

The Entomologist Identifier position involves identifying and verifying plant pests, including insects, arachnids, and mollusks, to specific taxonomic levels. The role requires monitoring pest samples, consulting with various agencies, and developing training materials for pest identification. This position is critical for ensuring compliance with quarantine actions and pest management strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies or verifies identification of plant pests to genera and species and the family level.
  • Refers unusual pests to National Identifiers when reference material is lacking.
  • Monitors samples submitted for identification and pest detection techniques.
  • Maintains and develops information on taxonomy, hosts, and distribution of plant pests.
  • Determines options for quarantine actions to be enforced by DHS and PPQ.
  • Consults with DHS and state departments of agriculture on pest identity and detection procedures.
  • Develops training modules and identification aids for federal and state employees.

Requirements

  • Degree in entomology or a related discipline with at least 16 semester hours in entomology.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in taxonomic work and pest identification.
  • Two years of graduate-level education leading to a master's degree in entomology or a related discipline.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in developing training materials and conducting training sessions.
  • Familiarity with pest management regulations and procedures.
