About the position

As an Entry Firefighter at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of the Savannah River Site. This position involves assisting experienced firefighters in performing routine firefighting and rescue functions, conducting fire equipment inspections, testing, and maintenance, as well as facility inspections. You will be trained for the Firefighter position and will work under the guidance of seasoned firefighters and supervisory personnel. Your responsibilities will include adhering to standard and special procedures, NFPA Codes, OSHA regulations, and DOE orders while performing your duties. You will maintain records of all inspections, maintenance, tests, and incidents related to fire safety. In this role, you will also be responsible for inspecting all buildings for fire hazards and hazardous conditions, working with pressurized cylinders and associated charging stations, and identifying compliance with NFPA codes and standards. You will drive and operate heavy mobile fire equipment, including trucks with pumps and specialized rescue and hazardous materials equipment. Responding to site fires or fire alarms and off-site emergencies, including hazardous material spills, will be part of your duties. You will routinely work in radiologically controlled areas and may be required to wear hazardous material and radiological protective clothing and respiratory equipment. Additionally, you will perform administrative functions as required, ensuring that all safety protocols are followed diligently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform facility inspections to identify fire hazards.
  • Train for the Firefighter position under supervision.
  • Maintain records of all inspections, maintenance, tests, and incidents.
  • Drive and operate heavy mobile fire equipment, including trucks with pumps.
  • Respond to all site fires or fire alarms and off-site emergencies.
  • Check and refill fire extinguishers as needed.
  • Routinely work in radiological controlled areas and comply with safety protocols.
  • Perform administrative duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • EMT Certification and training in accordance with NFPA 1001: Standards for Fire Fighter Level II.
  • Training in accordance with NFPA 472: Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents Operations Level.
  • Certification as a South Carolina Emergency Medical Technician or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Must maintain certification by training the minimum number of hours as prescribed by the SRS Fire Department Training Program.
  • Must maintain EMT Certification prescribed by the SRS Fire Department Emergency Medical Service Continuing Education Program.
  • Must pass a Job Performance Test which complies with NFPA 1582 Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments.
  • Able to work while wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Must maintain a valid state driver's license and Q security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience as a professional firefighter.
  • Previous experience as a practicing Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Certification equivalent to NFPA 472: Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents Technician Level.
