DLZ Corporation is seeking a motivated and hard-working Transportation / Traffic Engineer to join its team in Chicago, IL. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals who are eager to develop their skills in civil engineering, particularly in the transportation sector. The successful candidate will perform engineering and design assignments that require a solid understanding of engineering principles and the exercise of professional judgment. The role involves working on projects of minor complexity, providing support to more experienced personnel, and may include leadership responsibilities for less experienced staff. The Transportation / Traffic Engineer will be responsible for performing analyses and designs for minor structures, systems, and equipment items. This includes preparing sketches and diagrams for technicians, reviewing and checking detailed drawings and layouts, and assisting in the preparation of reports, economic and technical feasibility studies. The engineer will also assist in preparing contract proposals, specifications, and construction cost estimates, review contractor shop drawing submittals, and perform construction monitoring while coordinating field activities. Safety is a priority, and all work must be performed in accordance with the Health and Safety Plan. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering and design assignments requiring a solid grasp of at least one engineering discipline and the exercise of professional judgment.
  • Work on projects of minor complexity and may have leadership responsibility for less experienced staff.
  • Perform work under close supervision and provide support to more experienced personnel.
  • Conduct analyses and design for minor structures, systems, and equipment items.
  • Prepare sketches and diagrams for use by technicians and review detailed drawings and layouts.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, economic and technical feasibility studies, and evaluations of alternative systems, equipment, materials, or engineering methods.
  • Assist in the preparation of contract proposals, specifications, and construction cost estimates.
  • Review contractor's shop drawing submittals.
  • Perform construction monitoring and coordinate field activities.
  • Perform all work in a safe and responsible manner, in accordance with the Health and Safety Plan.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
  • 1 - 4 years' relevant experience in Civil Engineering, construction, and/or construction inspection
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to visit and safely traverse construction and project sites while complying with all applicable safety codes and requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • MicroStation or Open Roads Designer experience preferred.
  • Experience with IL Tollway, IDOT and/or CDOT projects a plus.
