About the position

As a Gas Meter Checker, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of communities by inspecting gas meters and underground gas lines for leaks and corrosion. This position is essential in the utility industry, where quality and safety are paramount. Your primary responsibilities will include visually examining gas meters and underground lines, completing necessary paperwork accurately, and reporting any unusual findings. You will be expected to arrive on time for your shifts, which are full-time from Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with occasional overtime and weekend work. No prior experience is required for this role, as we provide comprehensive paid training with an instructor. The starting pay is $24 per hour, with opportunities to earn up to $25 per hour based on your performance. Supervisors in this role can earn between $25 and $30 per hour. Additionally, you will receive a $500 signing bonus after successfully completing and passing the Operator Qualifications Test. The job requires physical stamina, as you will need to stand and walk for long periods on varying types of terrain, bend and stoop, and lift heavy items. You may walk between 3 to 4 miles per day in all types of weather. When a leak is detected, you will use a 5-pound plunger bar to punch holes in the ground for instrument probes to measure natural gas concentrations. Proficiency in using simple hand tools and technology, such as smartphones and tablets, is essential. You must also pass a drug screen test, provide a valid driver's license, and have a safe driving record. A CORI (Criminal Background) Check is required, along with passing the Operator Qualification Test as part of your training.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods on varying types of terrain.

  • Ability to use and understand utility maps.
  • Proficient at using technology (smartphone, tablet).
  • Must pass a Drug Screen Test.
  • Provide a valid Driver's License and Safe Driving Record.
  • Pass a CORI (Criminal Background) Check.
  • Pass the Operator Qualification Test as part of training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in customer service or utility industry (preferred but not mandatory).
