About the position

The Entry-Level Structural Engineer position in the Energy & Industrial Group at Sargent & Lundy involves supporting industry-leading projects in power generation and industrial design. The role focuses on applying knowledge of materials and structural analysis to create designs and specifications for various energy-related projects, including renewable energy and carbon capture technologies. The position offers opportunities for travel to client sites and is based on a hybrid work schedule requiring in-office work three days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Create calculations to develop structural document designs.
  • Prepare technical specifications for projects.
  • Conduct structural analyses under complex loading conditions such as wind, seismic, and pressurization.
  • Perform structural analysis and design of steel frames, connections, concrete members, equipment and piping supports, and foundations using advanced computer tools.
  • Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for structural condition assessments and construction coordination.

Requirements

  • BSCE or MSCE from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background in structural engineering.
  • Related engineering internship or co-op work experience.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and designation as an Engineer in Training.
  • Experience in writing support documentation for Structural Engineering calculations.
  • Two or more years of related experience in analysis and design of steel structures and concrete foundations for power plants or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Proficiency with programs such as MathCad, STAAD PRO, SAP2000, SAFE, STRUDL, or ANSYS.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
