About the position

Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking an exceptional entry-level Structural Engineering Associate to join their Structural Testing and Instrumentation team. This role offers the opportunity to learn from industry-leading experts while gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of structural engineering projects. The position involves working closely with project managers and participating in both field and laboratory investigations, contributing to innovative solutions in the built environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assume responsibility for key aspects of projects and complete assignments with limited oversight.
  • Learn and apply various nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods, instrumentation systems, and data collection and management tools for investigations and evaluations.
  • Perform on-site investigations, condition assessments, and construction observations, including surveying, documenting distress, field testing, and preparing site visit reports.
  • Analyze field and laboratory data and research to facilitate problem-solving and repair design.
  • Complete structural analysis of concrete, steel, wood, masonry, and other structural systems to support investigations.
  • Assist with drafting and preparation of client deliverables, including construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
  • Work as part of a collaborative team of technicians, scientists, and engineers to achieve project goals.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or better in civil/structural engineering from an accredited program.
  • Research or other prior experience related to laboratory testing, structural monitoring, instrumentation, and/or nondestructive evaluation (NDE) systems and tools.
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity for solving problems and understanding how things work.
  • Solid knowledge of structural engineering first principles.
  • Self-motivated and interested in learning new skills including software programs, electronic instrumentation systems, and testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis software (SAP2000 or similar), AutoCAD, Python, MATLAB, and LabVIEW.
  • Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in the field, both locally and outside the local area.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites for up to two weeks at a time.
