About the position

The Environmental Assistance Coordinator is a senior-level professional role within the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). This position serves as a regional point of contact for customers, assisting them in understanding and complying with DEQ environmental processes, requirements, and permits. The coordinator collaborates with various permitting programs and local and state economic development professionals to support business recruitment and site selection efforts. The role emphasizes customer service, providing timely responses to inquiries, and facilitating solutions for DEQ clients.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients with identifying applicable permits and facilitating pre-application meetings.
  • Attend meetings and site visits to support economic development projects as DEQ liaison.
  • Facilitate the collection of regulatory program comments for SEPA/NEPA projects.
  • Develop factsheets, tools, guidance documents, and presentations related to DEQ's resources.
  • Attend public meetings and events to educate the public and gather feedback on DEQ services.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience with an environmental regulatory program at the local, state, or federal level.
  • Knowledge of project management and planning.
  • Experience analyzing environmental data and information.
  • Ability to obtain a valid North Carolina State driver's license within 60 days of hire.
