Environmental Attorney

About the position

The position involves providing legal advice and guidance on various environmental and regulatory matters at IBM. The role requires collaboration with internal teams and external counsel to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations, as well as product safety and sustainability requirements. The successful candidate will act as a subject matter expert within the IBM Law Department, advising on risks and negotiating with regulators.

Responsibilities

• Advise on property environmental remediation (U.S. and international).
• Provide guidance on global environmental and chemical regulatory compliance.
• Ensure adherence to ESG regulations and requirements.
• Oversee product safety and hardware compliance.
• Conduct product and real estate due diligence in acquisitions and divestitures.
• Handle general real estate matters and agreements.
• Address environmental aspects of the supply chain.
• Negotiate with environmental regulators and attorneys.
• Advise IBM Law Department colleagues on environmental, product safety, and regulatory risks.
• Act as a subject matter expert for environmental and sustainability matters.
• Partner with compliance teams to provide legal direction.
• Oversee outside counsel supporting environmental matters.
• Identify efficiencies in the current legal support model and develop new structures.

Requirements

• J.D. with at least seven (7) years' experience as in-house corporate counsel, at a law firm, or equivalent experience, preferably in the tech field.
• License to practice law in a US jurisdiction, preferably New York.
• Excellent drafting, negotiation and communication skills.
• Sharp analytical skills with the ability to identify and resolve issues creatively and efficiently.
• Solid business judgment and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
• Familiarity with US and global data privacy and security laws and standards.
