About the position

The Environmental Claims Specialist at Sedgwick is responsible for analyzing and managing complex environmental liability claims. This role involves coordinating case management, ensuring compliance with company standards and client requirements, and providing high levels of customer service while managing claim costs. The specialist will also engage in negotiations, investigations, and legal coordination to resolve claims effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and processes complex environmental liability claims by investigating and gathering information to determine exposure.
  • Conducts or assigns full investigations, including coverage reviews and reporting on new events and claims.
  • Analyzes applicable complex liability insurance coverage and policies.
  • Negotiates claim settlements up to designated authority level.
  • Calculates and assigns timely and appropriate reserves to claims, monitoring reserve adequacy throughout the claim life.
  • Recommends settlement strategies and structured settlement proposals to maximize outcomes.
  • Coordinates legal defense by assigning attorneys and monitoring compliance with client guidelines.
  • Uses cost containment techniques to reduce overall claim costs for clients.
  • Identifies and investigates opportunities for fraud, subrogation, and recovery to reduce total claim costs.
  • Represents the company in depositions, mediations, and trial monitoring as needed.
  • Communicates claim activity and processing with clients, maintaining professional relationships.
  • Ensures proper documentation and coding of claim files.
  • Refers cases to supervisors and management as appropriate.
  • Delegates work and mentors assigned staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Ten (10) years of claims management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental liability insurance principles and laws.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • PC literate, including proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong analytical and interpretive skills.
  • Excellent negotiation skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
