About the position

The Environmental Control Person at Western Michigan University is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining various components of pneumatic, electric, and electronic systems that control heating, hot water, and air conditioning in university facilities. This role ensures that environmental temperatures are maintained properly through the management of control valves, thermostats, sensors, and other related equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Installs control valves in building heating and cooling systems.
  • Repairs, replaces, adjusts, and calibrates thermostats and sensors controlling individual rooms and large air handlers.
  • Visually inspects and observes pressure and vacuum gauges, adjusting controls to ensure proper operation.
  • Installs pneumatic and electronic control systems, including sensors, thermostats, and actuators.
  • Determines inventory requirements for supplies and notifies supervisory personnel when reordering is necessary.
  • Organizes assigned work to minimize materials and manhours required for proper completion.
  • Maintains the work area, tools, equipment, and supplies in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Performs additional duties as requested by supervisory personnel.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and safety regulations.
  • Sufficient writing and mathematical skills to prepare estimates and supply requisitions.
  • Completion of a registered apprenticeship program or a certified training program recognized by the University.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience at the journeyperson level in the trade.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job and use the tools of the trade.
  • Ability to complete a physical examination administered by the employer's designated physician.
