About the position

The Environmental Drill Site Technician is a seasonal role focused on ensuring environmental compliance and pollution prevention during drilling operations on the North Slope. This position serves as the primary contact for all environmental issues on-site, reporting directly to the drill rig representative and receiving general supervision from the ACS Area Specific Operations Supervisor. The technician is responsible for maintaining safety standards, managing spill response, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations while being on-call 24/7 during assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure a safe work environment.
  • Proactively take necessary actions to stop and/or correct unsafe behaviors or conditions.
  • Report and address safety concerns/issues/incidents promptly.
  • Assist in the investigation of incidents as required.
  • Immediately report all injuries, near misses, and property damage, with detailed documentation of all incidents or safety violations.
  • Maintain 100% personal 'Compliance Readiness'.
  • Familiarize with the area Oil Discharge Prevention and Contingency Plan.
  • Monitor site activities, ensuring compliance with all permit requirements.
  • Review camp/rig layout for conformance with prepared Polar Bear Interaction Plan.
  • Immediately report all wildlife interaction events.
  • Monitor tundra travel activity and report any tundra impacts.
  • Monitor on-site housekeeping to minimize demobilization clean-up requirements.
  • Act as the on-site Spill Leader during clean-up activities.
  • Ensure adequate cleanup of all spills and maintain all on-site spill response equipment.
  • Conduct visual inspections and startup of all equipment at the beginning of the job.
  • Complete proficiency checks prior to operating all on-site equipment.
  • Manage Drilling Conex inventory levels.
  • Observe fueling and fuel transfer operations, ensuring 'best management practices' are followed.
  • Make audit rounds with Fueler and maintain fueling log.
  • Ensure stationary equipment containing fluids are parked on impermeable surfaces.
  • Ensure all tanks, drum storage, valves, and lines are placed in lined containments designed to contain 110% of the capacity of the largest vessel.
  • Monitor snow accumulation inside containment areas and keep them free of snow and ice buildup.
  • Ensure correct marking and storage of all containers, labeling all drums and tanks on-site with rig name and number as well as the project name.
  • Ensure pad and ice road are kept clean of drips, drops, spots, and debris.
  • Perform all required spill reporting through the rig representative and ACS supervisor and maintain spill unit log.
  • Monitor waste handling and segregation activities.
  • Check Satellite Accumulation Areas and Recycle Accumulation Areas daily.
  • Take an initial 'Grab Sample' of incinerator ash prior to start-up as a fingerprint.
  • Monitor temporary waste storage containment areas for integrity and proper levels.
  • Verify appropriate waste manifesting for all off-site waste shipments.
  • Ensure all dumpsters are properly labeled and inspect for volume levels and compliance.
  • Work with kitchen staff to minimize food waste streams.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Intermediate computer skills in MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Understand and take direction from a variety of individuals including ACS, Member Company, and Rig staff.
  • NSTC Training.
  • Spill Response and Hazardous Waste experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  • Current 40-hour Hazwoper certification.
  • Pass Hazwoper physical.
  • Respirator fit tested (Full Face).
  • Ability to work 12-hour days, 7 days a week or longer as required.

Nice-to-haves

  • North Slope experience on the Conoco Phillips side is strongly preferred.
  • Previous winter exploration and/or construction experience.
