About the position

The Environmental Education Intern at Balsam Mountain Trust is a paid internship focused on gaining experience in public environmental education. The intern will assist the Education Outreach Coordinator in delivering K-12 environmental education programs, engaging with guests at a nature center, and planning local conservation events. This role is designed for individuals passionate about environmental stewardship and education, providing hands-on experience in a non-profit setting.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in public environmental education using live ambassador animals.
  • Creating lesson plans for environmental education programs and sourcing educational materials.
  • Delivering public environmental education in classrooms, libraries, county field days, and local parks.
  • Engaging visitors at a working Nature Center.
  • Planning and executing guided, interpretive hikes.
  • Assisting in planning local conservation events.
  • Managing environmental education client communication, tracking, and record keeping.
  • Setting goals and reflecting on professional growth and future career aspirations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
  • Must have a legal driver's license and consent to a criminal history check.
  • Must have an up-to-date tetanus shot.
  • Strong interest in the natural world, with preference for applicants pursuing college degrees in a related field.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated computer abilities in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint; webpage and social media background is a plus.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with diverse groups.

  • Demonstrated experience in environmental education.
