About the position

As a Senior Environmental Engineer at CDM Smith, you will play a pivotal role in supporting municipal water and wastewater projects throughout the Greater Chicago region. This position involves close collaboration with subject matter experts to develop and execute process mechanical designs tailored for water and wastewater projects. You will be responsible for creating engineering designs for a variety of facilities, including water and wastewater treatment plants, water and sewer systems, pipelines, pump stations, remediation sites, and solid waste facilities. These designs will range from basic to high complexity, ensuring they meet client project requirements and adhere to all relevant regulations. Your responsibilities will include reviewing draft designs and reports to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as signing off on completed designs. You will also conduct site reviews and studies to ensure that designs align with location specifications and update design requirements as necessary. Performing water quality analyses and modeling will be a key part of your role, as will contributing to the firm's knowledge management by developing white papers and technical design documentation for new or special case designs. In addition to technical responsibilities, you will collaborate with sales staff to create proposals in response to client requests for proposals (RFPs) and review draft proposals for adherence to regulations and best practices. Engaging with current and potential clients to discuss their design needs will be essential, as will attending conferences and symposia to enhance the visibility of the firm's products and services. You will also provide technical guidance and training to junior staff, mentoring them for future growth within the discipline and the firm. This position may involve supervising the work of junior engineers on project assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Support municipal water and wastewater projects in the Greater Chicago region.

  • Submit technical papers and designs for publication in technical journals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional engineering (PE) license.
  • 10 years of related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required, contingent on specific duties and project demands.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of computer-assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles of design.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft business software (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
