About the position

As a Senior Environmental Engineer at CDM Smith Inc., you will play a pivotal role in supporting municipal water and wastewater projects in the Kansas City area and its surroundings. This position requires close collaboration with subject matter experts to establish and execute process mechanical designs tailored for water and wastewater projects. You will be responsible for creating engineering designs that range from basic to high complexity, ensuring they meet client project requirements while adhering to federal, state, and local regulations. Your responsibilities will include reviewing draft designs and reports to ensure compliance, signing off on completed designs, and performing site reviews and studies to align designs with location specifications. You will also be tasked with updating design requirements as necessary and conducting water quality analyses and modeling. Additionally, you will contribute to the firm's knowledge management by developing white papers and technical design documentation for new or special case designs and studies, and submitting technical papers for publication in relevant journals. Collaboration with the sales team is essential, as you will help create proposals in response to current and potential client requests for proposals (RFPs). You will review draft proposals for adherence to regulations and best practices, and engage with clients to discuss their design needs. Participation in conferences and symposia will be part of your role to enhance the visibility of the firm's products and services. Furthermore, you will provide technical guidance and training to junior staff, mentoring them for future growth within the discipline and the firm. This position may also involve supervising the work of junior engineers on project assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Support municipal water and wastewater projects in the Kansas City region.
  • Create engineering designs for water and wastewater treatment facilities, sewer systems, pipelines, pump stations, and solid waste facilities.
  • Review draft designs and reports for compliance with regulations and sign off on completed designs.
  • Perform site reviews and studies to ensure designs meet location specifications.
  • Conduct water quality analyses and modeling.
  • Develop white papers and technical design documentation for new or special case designs.
  • Submit technical papers for publication in technical journals.
  • Collaborate with sales staff to create proposals in response to client RFPs.
  • Review draft proposals for adherence to regulations and best practices.
  • Engage with clients to discuss their design needs and future projects.
  • Attend conferences and symposia to promote the firm's products and services.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff and mentor them for growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in environmental engineering, specifically in water and wastewater projects.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to water and wastewater.
  • Proficiency in engineering design software and water quality modeling tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for client engagement and team collaboration.
  • Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
  • Experience with project management and leading engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with advanced water treatment technologies and processes.
  • Experience in preparing technical papers and presentations for conferences.
