About the position

This remote work position requires a dynamic individual with an engineering background, capable of working flexible hours primarily from Monday through Friday, and willing to travel up to 50% for fieldwork. The ideal candidate should reside in the Southcentral or Mid-Atlantic region of the US. The role involves a variety of field assignments related to contaminated site characterization, monitoring, remediation, and office work, including the preparation of planning and reporting documents. Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations is essential for higher-level position grades. The position is designed for individuals looking to advance their careers while engaging in diverse assignments such as sampling groundwater, soil, sediment, surface water, and air for environmental contaminants; gathering and recording environmental data; overseeing groundwater monitoring well installation; designing and operating remediation and treatment systems; utilizing global positioning systems; tabulating data; and preparing work plans and field reports. Essential duties include conducting contaminated site characterization, monitoring, and remediation field assessments safely and in accordance with work plans. The candidate will travel via aircraft (jets, small planes, and helicopters), motor vehicles, ATVs, and/or watercraft to perform fieldwork, site visits, or meetings. Responsibilities also encompass field screening and sampling for contaminants and environmental parameters in various media, designing, installing, and operating remediation and treatment systems, and documenting field operations meticulously. The role requires effective communication with project managers through phones, email, and daily reports, as well as examining and inspecting work progress, equipment, and job sites to ensure safety and compliance with project specifications. The candidate will also schedule and oversee subcontractors, adhere to project schedules and financial objectives, and assist or lead the preparation of proposals, planning documents, and reports. The position has specific responsibilities based on levels of expertise, with Level II requiring 3-5 years of relevant experience, Level III requiring 5-7 years, and Senior level requiring 8 or more years of experience along with Professional Engineer Registration. Each level involves varying degrees of client assistance, technical expertise, project management, and fieldwork, with expectations for leading teams and mentoring junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct contaminated site characterization, monitoring, and remediation field assessments safely and in accordance with work plans.
  • Travel in aircraft (jets, small planes, and helicopters), motor vehicles, ATVs, and/or watercraft to perform fieldwork, site visits, or meetings.
  • Field screening and sampling for contaminants and environmental parameters in a variety of media in accordance with standard operating procedures, guidance, and regulations.
  • Design, install, and operate remediation and treatment systems such as air sparge systems, soil vapor extraction systems, and water treatment systems.
  • Document field operations, including personnel onsite, equipment on site, weather, environmental data, and operational data using photography, neat and legible handwritten fieldnotes and forms, and tablets.
  • Communicate with project managers using phones, email, and daily reports.
  • Examine and inspect work progress, equipment, and job sites to verify safety and ensure that project specifications are met.
  • Schedule and oversee subcontractors.
  • Adhere to schedule and financial objectives as specified by project managers.
  • Assist or lead the preparation of proposals, planning documents, and reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably civil, environmental, chemical, or geotechnical.
  • Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record, able to drive a company vehicle.
  • Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite and databases such as Access.
  • Adept at explaining technical aspects of fieldwork to internal and external clients verbally and in writing.
  • Level II: 3-5 years of relevant professional working experience, specialized training, and/or an advanced degree such as MS may be substituted for work experience.
  • Level III: 5-7 years of relevant professional working experience, specialized training, and/or an advanced degree such as MS may be substituted for work experience.
  • Level Senior: 8 or more years of relevant professional working experience, specialized training, and/or an advanced degree such as MS may be substituted for work experience; Professional Engineer Registration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in other programs such as Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, GIS, databases, and environmental modeling programs.

  • Current 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher certification.
