About the position

The Environmental Engineer at Charter Steel will play a crucial role in ensuring environmental compliance at the Saukville, WI plant. This position involves identifying, developing, and implementing environmental compliance requirements, coordinating environmental reporting, and facilitating continuous improvement in environmental and energy management systems. The engineer will work closely with operations and management to support capital projects and ensure effective waste management and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop, and implement all environmental compliance requirements including training and effective communication of requirements.
  • Work with Operations and Management to ensure an effective permitting process for capital projects, process changes, business expansions, or other changes that require environmental review.
  • Coordinate all required environmental compliance reporting including data collection, review and analysis.
  • Create compliance reports, review reports with the Environmental Manager to confirm compliance status and address areas of non-compliance.
  • Compile, analyze, and retain facility data and records required to demonstrate compliance.
  • Facilitate Continuous Improvement and maintain the effectiveness of the Environmental & Energy Management System.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain procedures, performance standards and measurement tools in the areas of environmental and energy management.
  • Coordinate proper management of waste streams including collection, disposal, documentation, and tracking.
  • Perform or assist in completing environmental audits and energy assessments as well as waste disposal service providers and raw materials suppliers.
  • Manage the investigation, implementation, and tracking of corrective actions as necessary.
  • Develop, support, and participate in plant environmental and energy teams focused on continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate and maintain radiation safety programs and emergency action planning in cooperation with the safety department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science/Engineering or related degree.
  • Four plus years' successful experience in environmental compliance.
  • Working knowledge in the use of Environmental Management Systems.
  • Experience interacting with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to interpret and apply environmental regulations on a practical basis.
  • A working background with team environments (SDWT, problem solving teams or work cells) or equivalent team training.
  • Effective presentation and training skills based on solid written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent recordkeeping skills (filing, organization, etc.).
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building, and team skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative based on sound problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage environmental data and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Knowledge of EPA and state environmental standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or Business Administration.
  • Demonstrated success in planning and implementing effective environmental systems especially ISO14001.
  • Training or experience as an internal auditor.
  • Training in total quality management, continuous improvement and customer service systems or experience with similar processes.
  • Working knowledge of IEPA permit processes and regulations.
