About the position

Vertex Resource Services Inc. is currently seeking an Environmental Field Technician to join our team in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This role is essential for supporting our environmental projects primarily within the oil and gas industry across North America. The successful candidate will possess a solid understanding of practical fieldwork, report writing, and project coordination, along with strong communication skills. The Environmental Field Technician will work closely with our environmental team to conduct various environmental projects, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards. The Environmental Field Technician will be responsible for providing technical field support on a range of environmental projects, including spill response, site assessment and characterization, remediation, reclamation, environmental planning and permitting, regulatory submissions, environmental monitoring and inspection, and groundwater assessments. This position requires a hands-on approach, as the technician will be involved in both field and office execution of projects, with a strong emphasis on fieldwork. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, rangeland science, natural resources, biology, geology, or a closely related field. Knowledge of the oil and gas industry and experience working outdoors and in an office setting are preferred. The role demands proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel, and the ability to communicate effectively with project managers and clients. The technician will also oversee contractors on-site and will be responsible for ensuring that all project activities are executed safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical field support on environmental projects within the energy industry of the United States.
  • Assist in spill response, site assessment and characterization, remediation, reclamation, environmental planning and permitting, regulatory submissions, environmental monitoring and inspection, and groundwater assessments.
  • Utilize Trimble or equivalent GPS for fieldwork.
  • Conduct soil sampling and lab analysis, ensuring chain of custody is maintained.
  • Perform water sampling or abatement activities as required.
  • Manage time effectively and utilize resources efficiently during project execution.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with project managers and clients, both in writing and verbally.
  • Oversee contractors as a Person in Charge (PIC) on site, ensuring compliance with safety and project standards.
  • Execute both field and office tasks related to environmental projects, with a focus on fieldwork.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the environmental team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, rangeland science, natural resources, biology, geology, or a closely related field.
  • Understanding of the environmental consulting industry.
  • Knowledge of the oil and gas industry is advantageous.
  • Experience working outdoors and in an office setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of applicable environmental and energy sector regulations, standards, and codes.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word & Excel).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of geology and/or rangeland science is a strong asset.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring and inspection.
