The Creative Services team at the University of Virginia's Facilities Management is seeking an energetic and collaborative Environmental Graphic Designer to create informative and visually inspiring graphics as well as help incorporate the new wayfinding and signage system across the University. This position is ideal for an experienced experiential designer who is passionate about integrating art, storytelling, and brand expression into the built environment. The successful candidate will report to the assistant director of Creative Services and will be responsible for strategically conceptualizing entire projects, designing individual custom elements, and producing interior sign packages for new and renovated building projects. The role requires a range of both creative and technical experience, as well as a highly motivated problem-solving attitude. The candidate must be able to manage a diverse project load and client base, as projects are multifaceted and highly collaborative. A self-driven, organized, cooperative, and flexible attitude is essential for success in this position. The Environmental Graphic Designer will develop creative design solutions that align with project goals while understanding their impact on cost, production, and other variables. The designer will oversee the end-to-end creative process, from conceptualization to execution, collaborating with clients, other designers, interior designers, space managers, project managers, and sign production professionals. The role involves managing multiple design and/or sign projects at various stages of development, creating mockup 2D graphics for the built environment using tools like Illustrator and Photoshop, and researching and integrating art, experience design, new materials, technologies, and building methods into design ideas. The designer will also develop interior wayfinding/sign packages for new and renovated buildings, lead visioning sessions, design critiques, and client meetings, and coordinate with project managers and sign production/installation professionals to ensure quality and timely delivery of design solutions and sign packages. Conducting site visits, surveys, and inspections to verify the accuracy and compliance of environmental graphics and signage with project requirements and standards is also a key responsibility. Maintaining strong client communication throughout the entire design and installation process is crucial, as is assisting with traditional design jobs during downtime in experiential projects.
