About the position

The Environmental Graphic Designer at the University of Virginia's Facilities Management will be responsible for creating informative and visually inspiring graphics, as well as implementing a new wayfinding and signage system across the University. This role requires a blend of creative and technical skills to manage diverse projects and collaborate with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Develop creative design solutions that align with project goals and consider cost and production variables.
  • Oversee the end-to-end creative process from conceptualization to execution, collaborating with clients and other professionals.
  • Manage multiple design and sign projects at various stages of development.
  • Create mockup 2D graphics for the built environment using Illustrator and/or Photoshop.
  • Research and integrate art, experience design, new materials, technologies, and building methods into design ideas.
  • Develop interior wayfinding/sign packages for new and renovated buildings.
  • Lead visioning sessions, design critiques, and client meetings.
  • Coordinate with project managers and sign production professionals to ensure quality and timely delivery of design solutions.
  • Conduct site visits, surveys, and inspections to verify compliance of environmental graphics and signage with project requirements.
  • Maintain strong client communication throughout the design and installation process.
  • Assist with traditional design jobs during downtime in experiential projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Environmental Design, or related field, or a high school diploma with at least four years of experience in experiential design.
  • Minimum three years of experience in wayfinding/signage and experiential design.
  • Experience collaborating with graphic designers, architects, project managers, engineers, and clients.
  • Ability to communicate concept ideas through sketches, diagrams, and mood boards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including client presentations.
  • Experience in developing interior wayfinding/signage packages.
  • Knowledge of Universal Design and ADA standards.
  • Ability to read floor plans and determine sign type, quantity, and placement.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe CC programs (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.).
