About the position

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist position at Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) is responsible for addressing workplace safety, environmental hazards, and regulatory compliance. This role serves as the primary point of contact for EHS concerns and involves managing compliance across various environments, including classrooms, kitchens, and athletic facilities. Key duties include overseeing indoor air quality, hazardous materials remediation, and ensuring adherence to environmental and occupational safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in identifying training needs and developing EHS-related training courses for LCPS employees.
  • Manage water quality by investigating, monitoring, and resolving complaints.
  • Conduct job hazard analysis and facility safety audits to identify potential EHS concerns.
  • Develop and review occupational safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Inspect facilities for hazardous materials, including asbestos and lead.
  • Oversee the removal or abatement of hazardous materials found in school facilities.
  • Monitor the selection, purchase, storage, and handling of hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Serve as Essential Personnel and respond to facility emergencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Safety, or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Virginia Waterworks Operator (Class 4) preferred.
  • Ability to understand and apply federal and state regulations regarding occupational safety and environmental management.
  • Experience with industrial hygiene issues, including noise and water testing.
  • Experience working in an educational environment with safety equipment and custodial operations.
  • Ability to conduct environmental testing and investigate water quality concerns.
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations governing hazardous materials.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory safety equipment and chemical hygiene plans.
  • Familiarity with biosafety manuals.
