About the position

The Environmental Health Specialist position at Adams County encompasses four levels (I-IV), each with increasing responsibilities and requirements. The role focuses on conducting inspections and investigations related to environmental health, ensuring compliance with state and local regulations. Specialists will engage in community outreach, provide training, and may lead special projects or teams, depending on their level. The position allows for a hybrid work environment, combining onsite and remote work based on departmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates environmental health conditions and initiates compliance orders.
  • Performs field tests to ensure safe operation of equipment and facilities.
  • Conducts inspections of various facilities to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
  • Communicates findings to facility owners and managers effectively.
  • Inputs data accurately into environmental health program systems.
  • Reviews and approves plans and specifications for environmental health compliance.
  • Participates in community outreach to promote environmental health programs.
  • May lead special teams or projects depending on the level of the position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health or related field with coursework in physical, biological, chemical, or sanitary sciences.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) credential for EHS III and IV levels.
  • Experience requirements vary by level: EHS I (none), EHS II (2 years), EHS III (4 years with 2 as EHS II), EHS IV (6 years with 2 as EHS III).

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in environmental health or related field (preferred for EHS II-IV).
  • Experience in public health agency roles.
  • Knowledge of National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) equipment standards.
