About the position

The Forsyth County Department of Public Health is seeking a Part-Time Environmental Health Specialist to work in the Water and Wastewater Section. This role involves evaluating and permitting various environmental health activities, including soil site evaluations, septic system inspections, and water sampling. The specialist will also assist in maintaining public health standards and regulations related to wastewater treatment and sanitation.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and permit soil site evaluations and septic system installations.
  • Inspect new well constructions and abandonments.
  • Collect water samples from new and existing wells.
  • Conduct operation and maintenance inspections of existing septic systems.
  • Assist the Vector Control Program as needed.
  • Review plans and engineering data for package plants and sand filters; issue or revoke permits.
  • Enforce regulations governing mobile home courts through inspections and compliance checks.
  • Perform soil/site evaluations to determine suitability for ground absorption installations.
  • Design large and alternative sewage disposal systems.
  • Investigate public complaints and initiate corrective actions as necessary.
  • Prepare and maintain related records and reports.
  • Provide information and training to the public regarding policies and regulations governing permits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health from an accredited program or a Bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in physical or biological sciences and two years of experience in environmental health.
  • One year of experience in the field of environmental health.
  • Current authorization as an Environmental Health Specialist (Sanitarian) by the NC State Board of Sanitarian Examiners.
  • Valid NC driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of onsite wastewater treatment systems and communicable diseases.
  • Experience with swimming pools and vector control.
  • Knowledge of environmental health laws and public health law concepts.
