About the position

The Environmental Health Technician position within the U.S. Government focuses on conducting inspections and implementing programs related to environmental health and sanitation. This role is essential for ensuring the safety and quality of drinking water, food sanitation, and disease prevention, particularly in military settings. The position requires a combination of fieldwork, data management, and training responsibilities, with opportunities for career advancement through a multi-grade career ladder.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular drinking water quality inspections.
  • Perform bacteriological testing for water and ice sources.
  • Provide food sanitation training to military and civilian personnel.
  • Implement the environmental and communicable disease prevention program.
  • Maintain the latent tuberculosis treatment database and report discrepancies to the Preventive Medicine Officer (PMO).
  • Perform entry and quality assurance of Military Readiness Reporting System (MRRS) data entries.
  • Assist the Rabies Control Program and coordinate animal bite report completion with relevant services.
  • Analyze and evaluate collected data, noting trends and anomalies.
  • Complete daily entries of relevant data in various electronic databases.
  • Perform routine quality assurance checks of databases to ensure complete data entry.
  • Ensure database information compliance with HIPAA Privacy Act precautions.
  • Debug databases to maintain day-to-day functionality.
  • Generate tables, charts, and trend reports from databases.
  • Train junior personnel on database management and usage.
  • Document and implement performance improvement actions.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in environmental health or sanitation.
  • Experience in identifying, preventing, or eliminating health hazards in environmental sanitation.
  • Practical knowledge of environmental health hazards, survey techniques, and control methods.
  • Ability to conduct health education classes and implement disease surveillance programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with database management and quality assurance practices.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.
  • Experience in training and mentoring junior personnel.
