About the position

The Environmental Journalist/Staff Writer at Texas Southern University is responsible for researching and writing articles that inform environmental justice communities and the general public about critical environmental issues. This role aims to promote environmental awareness and inspire action through storytelling and journalism.

Responsibilities

• Generate story ideas related to environmental and climate justice.
• Conduct interviews with experts, eyewitnesses, and affected individuals in communities of color.
• Research environmental issues using scientific reports and reliable sources.
• Verify facts through multiple sources and cross-checking information.
• Write clear and engaging articles using strong storytelling techniques.
• Take photographs or videos to accompany articles when necessary.
• Collaborate with editors to ensure accuracy and clarity of stories.
• Stay updated on environmental and climate-related news and developments.
• Attend conferences and events related to environmental journalism.
• Participate in HBCU Consortium-related conferences and environmental initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in journalism, English, communications, or a related field.
• 4-5 years of professional writing experience with a solid portfolio of work.
• Exceptional writing and research skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and multitasking ability.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
