About the position

The Environmental Journalist at the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice is responsible for researching and writing impactful stories that inform and engage environmental justice communities and the general public about critical environmental issues. This role emphasizes promoting environmental awareness and action through effective storytelling and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Generate story ideas related to environmental and climate justice.
  • Conduct interviews with experts, eyewitnesses, and affected individuals in communities of color.
  • Research environmental issues using scientific reports and reliable sources.
  • Verify facts through multiple sources and cross-checking information.
  • Write clear and engaging articles using strong storytelling techniques.
  • Take photographs or videos to accompany articles when necessary.
  • Collaborate with editors to ensure accuracy and clarity of stories.
  • Stay updated on environmental and climate-related news and developments.
  • Attend conferences and events related to environmental journalism and activism.
  • Participate in HBCU Consortium-related conferences and educational initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) in journalism, English, communications, or a related field.
  • 4-5 years of professional writing experience with a solid portfolio of work.
  • Exceptional writing and research skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and multitasking ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of environmental, climate, and social justice issues.
  • Skill in developing and writing journalist-style stories.
