About the position

The Environmental Manager is responsible for developing and implementing project permitting strategies, plans, schedules, and budgets to achieve environmental objectives for assigned projects. This role ensures compliance with environmental regulations and promotes a culture of environmental responsibility within the organization. The position is site-based in Chester, VA, and includes responsibilities such as managing stormwater systems, securing permits, and providing leadership on environmental best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the company has compliant programs, operations, and culture to effectively manage environmental compliance requirements.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations by studying existing and new legislation and advising management on needed actions.
  • Provide direction and leadership to contractors, consultants, and project team members on environmental aspects and impacts at the jobsite.
  • Manage requirements for stormwater systems to comply with NPDES, including SWPPP and BMPs.
  • Identify permitting requirements and secure permits from environmental agencies to support project schedules.
  • Develop environmental systems, policies, and procedures; train managers and employees on compliance.
  • Identify and anticipate environmental concerns and hazards; investigate violations and recommend preventive programs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies and municipalities to facilitate compliance and remedial strategies.
  • Conduct project reviews, site visits, and monitor compliance; interface with project leadership to present updates.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years' progressive professional experience in the Environmental Compliance Field.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. and State of Virginia Environmental regulations.
  • Experience with energy management programs and U.S. Health and Safety regulations.
  • Understanding of civil engineering design and construction methods.
  • Knowledge of mass grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and utility infrastructure requirements.
  • Effective leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Ability to self-prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • BA or BS degree in Engineering or Environmental Sciences preferred.
  • 10+ years of prior relevant experience preferred.
