About the position

The Environmental Permitting Specialist at AECOM will be responsible for managing and directing environmental permitting processes in the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly focusing on New Jersey. This role involves collaboration within a team to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while providing opportunities for career growth. The specialist will lead various permitting tasks, including report writing, application preparation, and coordination with clients and agencies, while also overseeing field investigations and ecological assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead preliminary desktop assessments of potential permitting requirements for proposed projects.
  • Develop detailed permit matrices composed of applicable federal/state/local environmental regulations.
  • Originate strategies for obtaining Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 404/401 permitting and other necessary permits.
  • Coordinate and lead due diligence desktop and field-based site investigations.
  • Conduct aquatic resources delineation and prepare reporting for USACE Approved Jurisdictional Determination.
  • Perform T&E species habitat assessments and coordinate with subcontractors and agencies.
  • Review cultural resources investigations and associated reporting.
  • Prepare and manage permit applications for various federal and state permits.
  • Lead task management according to approved scopes of work, ensuring quality deliverables on schedule and within budget.
  • Coordinate conversations with clients and governmental agencies.
  • Manage subcontractors and vendors effectively.
  • Serve as a technical lead for environmental and biological assessments across the region.
  • Assist Senior Managers with business development activities.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Biology, or related field +6 years of experience or equivalent education/experience.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review.
  • US Citizenship required.
  • 6+ years of experience completing NJ and federal permits in accordance with regulations.
  • Project task management experience with oversight of staff and budget.
  • Proficiency in permit application preparation in NJ and other mid-Atlantic states.
  • Strong technical writing and deliverable development skills.
  • Experience with regional NJ environmental and ecological permits.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in ecological assessments for natural gas, electric utilities, and renewables industries.
  • Technical writing experience for siting studies, FERC resource reports, or NEPA analysis.
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) background or knowledge.
  • Driver's license with trailer certification; boat transportation/operation experience.
  • Safety training (i.e., OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hours).
