About the position

The Environmental Permitting Specialist at AECOM will be responsible for managing and directing environmental permitting processes in the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly focusing on New Jersey. This role involves collaboration within an interdisciplinary team to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while providing opportunities for career growth within the Environmental Planning and Permitting (EPP) team. The specialist will lead various permitting tasks, including report writing, application preparation, and coordination with clients and agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Leading preliminary desktop assessments of potential permitting requirements for proposed projects.
  • Leading development of detailed permit matrices composed of applicable federal/state/local environmental regulations.
  • Leading development of strategy for obtaining Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 404/401 permitting and other permits.
  • Coordination and leading due diligence desktop and field-based site investigations in support of project planning and permitting.
  • Conducting aquatic resources delineation and preparing reports for USACE Approved Jurisdictional Determination.
  • Performing T&E species habitat assessments and coordinating with subcontractors and agencies.
  • Conducting technical reviews of ecological assessment documents and other industry reports.
  • Preparing and managing permit applications for various federal and state permits.
  • Leading task management according to approved scopes of work and delivering quality deliverables on schedule and within budget.
  • Coordinating and leading conversations with clients and governmental agencies.
  • Managing subcontractors and vendors.
  • Serving as a technical lead for environmental, biological, permitting, and other impact assessments.
  • Assisting Senior Managers with business development activities.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Biology, or related field +6 years of experience or equivalent education/experience.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review.
  • US Citizenship required.

Nice-to-haves

  • 6+ years of experience completing NJ and federal permits.
  • Project task management experience with oversight of staff and budget.
  • Proficiency in permit application preparation in NJ and other mid-Atlantic states.
  • Experience in ecological assessments for natural gas, electric utilities, and renewables industries.
  • Technical writing experience for siting studies, FERC resource reports, or NEPA analysis.
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) background.
  • Safety training (i.e., OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hours).
  • Excellent communication skills, including technical writing.
