About the position

The Environmental Program Specialist 1/Trainee 1/2 position within the New York Department of Environmental Conservation focuses on overseeing the implementation of solid waste and recycling programs. The role involves providing technical assistance, conducting inspections, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The incumbent will also engage with municipalities and the public, participate in enforcement actions, and analyze environmental monitoring data.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee implementation of solid waste and recycling programs.
  • Provide technical assistance and information regarding regulations to consultants, municipalities, and regulated entities.
  • Conduct inspections of solid waste management facilities to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Participate in enforcement actions based on inspection findings.
  • Respond to and track complaints related to solid waste management.
  • Review registration and permit applications for consistency with regulations.
  • Analyze environmental monitoring data, including soil and groundwater sampling data.
  • Participate in meetings and respond to inquiries from regulated entities and the public.
  • Provide presentations on solid waste and recycling matters during outreach events.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, biology, or engineering.
  • For Trainee 2: A bachelor's degree and one year of professional qualifying experience.
  • For Environmental Program Specialist 1: A bachelor's degree and two years of qualifying experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in environmental policy or program management.
  • Knowledge of solid waste management regulations.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
