The Environmental Program Specialist (EPS) at the City of Austin is a full-time role focused on managing household hazardous waste collection and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This position involves direct interaction with residents, overseeing the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials, and coordinating with waste disposal companies. The EPS plays a crucial role in public education regarding hazardous waste management and contributes to various environmental programs within the Austin Resource Recovery division.

  • Receive, identify, segregate, and store household hazardous waste from residents.
  • Set up, break down, and clean the Household Hazardous Waste facility.
  • Coordinate with waste disposal companies for the packing and loading of hazardous waste for transportation.
  • Act as the primary contact for customer inquiries regarding hazardous waste disposal.
  • Review hazardous waste contracts from all City of Austin departments and assist with proper disposal and handling of hazardous waste.
  • Conduct research for new hazardous waste operations and recycling technologies.
  • Document and track data related to customer participation and waste characterization for reporting purposes.
  • Develop and implement public outreach and education programs regarding hazardous waste management.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in hazardous waste management, environmental consulting, or environmental planning/research.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Data analysis skills and experience with research.
  • Experience working outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER training.
  • Previous experience with chemicals or household hazardous waste materials.
