About the position

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Environmental Project Coordinator within the Natural Resources Division. This professional role is pivotal in overseeing various County programs related to marine resources, including dune management, coral reefs, artificial reefs, marine biological monitoring, living shorelines, and the conservation of protected marine species such as manatees and sea turtles. The Environmental Project Coordinator will manage the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program and serve as a core staff member for other Marine Resources projects. In this capacity, the coordinator will be responsible for all aspects of the Sea Turtle Conservation Program, which includes developing and managing contracts and budgets, evaluating and analyzing data, and coordinating with federal and state agencies, municipalities, and volunteer groups. The role also involves performing community outreach, conducting advanced independent research, and managing GIS databases to evaluate program success and recommend necessary policy or procedural modifications. Collaboration with local academia and other organizations to further research on sea turtles and their habitats is also a key component of this position. Additionally, the Environmental Project Coordinator will participate as a core scientific diver in coral reef and artificial reef investigations, biological monitoring, data collection, analysis, and report writing. Candidates should possess a high level of motivation, creativity, and superior organizational and project management skills, as this role operates under general supervision, allowing for independent development of work methods and sequences.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program, including contract and budget management.
  • Evaluate and analyze data related to marine resources and conservation efforts.
  • Coordinate with federal and state agencies, municipalities, and volunteer groups for program success.
  • Perform community outreach to raise awareness about marine conservation efforts.
  • Conduct advanced independent research, including GIS database development and management.
  • Collaborate with local academia and organizations for research on sea turtles and their habitats.
  • Oversee contractor work, issue payments, and review deliverables related to environmental services.
  • Participate in coral reef and artificial reef investigations as a scientific diver.
  • Prepare written technical reports and agency correspondence regarding environmental programs.
  • Develop project maps and applications using GIS software.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental planning, environmental science, or a closely related field.
  • Two years of experience in environmental/natural resource programs or closely related experience, including one year of lead work/supervisory experience.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced Degree (M.S./Ph.D.) in Marine Biology/Science, Oceanography, Coastal Zone Management, or closely related field.
  • 3+ years of professional work experience in marine/coastal science or similar field.
  • 2+ years of experience in GIS, including creation of GIS layers and database management.
  • 2+ years of experience in writing scientific reports and utilizing multivariate statistical analysis.
  • 2+ years of public speaking and communication experience.
  • 2+ years of professional experience conducting biological assessments of reef communities.
  • 2+ years of maintaining the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) certification.
  • 2+ years of boat handling/navigating experience.
