About the position

The Environmental Protection Specialist IV is responsible for conducting x-ray inspections and assessments to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental and public health regulations. This role involves planning and executing complex inspections, utilizing specialized detection equipment, and preparing detailed technical reports. The specialist also addresses public inquiries and participates in disaster response efforts, working independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Independently plan and execute advanced technical inspections of radiation-producing machines across various sectors.
  • Conduct advanced functional testing, including radiation measurements and output linearity evaluations.
  • Review complex documentation to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare detailed technical inspection reports using web-based software and submit them for technical review.
  • Address public complaints or suspected incidents related to x-ray machines and radiation-generating devices.
  • Participate in disaster response and recovery efforts as a member of the Radiation Emergency Response Team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a physical science or health-related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Current or previous ARRT or MRT Certification as a Radiologic Technologist with at least two years of experience, or MQSA Inspector Certification.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations relating to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
  • Skilled in the operation and maintenance of radiation detection and field-testing equipment.
  • Ability to interpret laws and regulations and apply scientific principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience applying laws, rules, policies, and procedures relating to governmental regulation.
  • Experience as a state or federal inspector.
  • Experience as a Radiation Safety Officer or Laser Safety Officer.
  • Experience in a health physics position or regulatory/quality control position in a regulated industry.
  • Experience in assembling, maintenance, or repair of radiation machines.
