About the position

The Environmental Protection Specialist - Field Technician position supports the Department of Energy's Western Area Power Administration in Folsom, CA. The role involves performing various environmental compliance activities, coordinating with natural resources and maintenance staff, and providing environmental compliance services as directed. The technician will engage in field services related to spill response, inspections, hazardous waste disposal, and environmental training, ensuring adherence to environmental regulations and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field services for spill response and inspections, including escorting regulators.
  • Conduct environmental inspections, appraisals, and compliance activities.
  • Field verify Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans and Hazardous Materials Business Plan requirements.
  • Stock spill kit supplies and clean out storage buildings.
  • Inventory hazardous wastes and materials, and prepare them for disposal.
  • Document waste disposals and collect/process waste samples.
  • Assist with the environmental training program and data maintenance.
  • Support the environmental team with field activities and surveys.
  • Sign and maintain hazardous waste manifests.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of environmental compliance site work experience.
  • Professional technical writing experience.
  • Experience with environmental impact assessments and NEPA reviews, preferably in the Electric Utility Industry.
  • Experience coordinating with State and Federal agencies.
  • HAZWOPER certification (40-hour initial training + 8-hour annual refresher).
  • CA Title 22 (RCRA) and DOT certification (every 3 years).
  • Forklift certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with reporting systems such as SPCC Reporting and Hazardous Materials Business Plans.
  • Effective communication with diverse technical, field, and administrative staff.
  • Ability to represent the Environment team in a professional manner.
