About the position

The Environmental Protection Specialist position at the Department of Homeland Security focuses on providing environmental and historic preservation guidance, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations for grants. The role involves reviewing documentation, coordinating with various stakeholders, and educating non-environmental practitioners on compliance best practices. This position is critical in supporting FEMA's mission to assist in disaster response and recovery efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide environmental and historic preservation compliance technical assistance to teammates and partners.
  • Coordinate with environmental and historic preservation staff in field and regional offices to identify compliance issues.
  • Ensure environmental and historic preservation compliance is incorporated into grants.
  • Determine if grants require environmental and historic preservation compliance review and identify additional documentation needed.
  • Ensure grants comply with environmental and historic preservation laws and executive orders, including the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and relevant Executive Orders.
  • Educate non-environmental and historic preservation practitioners on EHP compliance laws and best practices.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the IC-09 level in the Federal government, including reviewing documentation for compliance with environmental and historic preservation laws.
  • Experience recommending environmental and historic preservation improvements and collaborating with stakeholders to identify issues.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher-level education leading to such a degree, or LL.B. or J.D. if related, or a combination of education and experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in emergency management or disaster response.
  • Knowledge of federal environmental regulations and compliance processes.
