About the position

The Environmental Protection Specialist position at the Department of Homeland Security involves serving as a subject matter expert in environmental and cultural resource laws and regulations. The role focuses on reviewing projects for compliance, providing expert advice to minimize adverse environmental impacts, and leading compliance reviews for FEMA-funded activities related to environmental and historic preservation laws.

Responsibilities

• Providing expert advice on how to avoid or minimize adverse impacts to the environment and comply with environmental planning and historic preservation responsibilities.
• Leading compliance reviews and providing advice for FEMA-funded activities related to Environmental and Historic Preservation (EHP) laws, regulations, and executive orders.
• Serving as a subject matter expert in providing guidance related to National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews while managing and resolving complex compliance projects.
• Developing, reviewing, and finalizing consultation and agreement documents, standard operating procedures, and tools related to environmental and historic preservation compliance.
• Providing technical advice and guidance to regional, State, Territorial, Tribal, and local officials in the development of sound projects and construction strategies.

Requirements

• One full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the IC-11 level in the Federal government.
• Experience in developing or reviewing environmental and historical preservation compliance strategies, reports, or guidance.
• Experience in drafting and delivering reports or briefings to Federal, State, Local, or Tribal stakeholders.
• Experience applying environmental planning or historic preservation regulations, policies, or principles at various governmental levels.
