About the position

The Environmental Protection Specialist serves as the Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS) Program Manager for the VISN 15 (VA Heartland Network). This leadership role is crucial for ensuring that medical facilities comply with federal, state, and local environmental protection regulations, as well as VA and VHA directives. The incumbent will oversee the development and implementation of environmental strategies to protect human health and the environment, while also advising senior management on policy direction and program oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies for effective coordination and integration of Environmental Management programs.
  • Review and evaluate technical data, directives, and guidance related to environmental programs, keeping management informed of significant changes.
  • Conduct visits to medical centers and clinics to assess the efficiency of environmental programs and recommend corrective actions.
  • Consult and coordinate with environmental experts, engineers, and legal advisors on environmental issues.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Network Director, providing oversight on environmental program areas.
  • Facilitate accurate and timely regulatory reporting of environmental information to various agencies and internal compliance reporting.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the VISN Environmental Health and Safety program through audits and surveys, identifying regulatory deficiencies and recommending corrective actions.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this job.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-12 level in the Federal service.
  • Experience in resourcing, implementing, and overseeing environmental programs.
  • Experience in conducting environmental assessments for regulatory compliance and conservation.
  • Ability to prepare environmental documents and reports for project coordination.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in environmental audits and management surveys.
  • Knowledge of environmental engineering and hazardous materials management.
