About the position

The Environmental Protection Specialist position serves as an Historic Preservation Specialist for FEMA Region Five, focusing on ensuring compliance with environmental and historic preservation regulations. The role involves reviewing projects, developing documentation, and providing technical assistance to stakeholders, all while supporting FEMA's mission to assist communities before, during, and after disasters.

Responsibilities

• Review projects or programs for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and provide recommendations to mitigate adverse impacts.
• Oversee and develop historic preservation documentation, reports, or plans, including consultations with State Historic Preservation Offices and Tribal Nations.
• Review contractor-developed Determinations of Effect and consultation materials.
• Make technical comments on environmental documentation and review environmental protection plans.
• Participate in meetings and site visits to convey environmental policy or program concepts to stakeholders.

Requirements

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the IC-07 level in the Federal government, demonstrating understanding of Historic Preservation laws and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
• Experience working as part of a team to accomplish tasks or goals and coordinating with stakeholders through written or verbal communication.
• For higher levels, experience must include applying historic preservation legislation, assisting stakeholders with compliance issues, and preparing consultations and presentations.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in a related field.
• Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant area.
