About the position

The Environmental Quality Analyst position within the State of Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is responsible for administering and implementing the Drinking Water Contamination Investigation Program. This role focuses on protecting public health by ensuring that groundwater used for drinking and domestic purposes is free from contamination by toxic chemicals and pathogenic bacteria. The analyst evaluates contamination sources, develops corrective action programs, and coordinates with local health departments and state laboratories to ensure safe drinking water across a specified geographic area.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and implement the Drinking Water Contamination Investigation Program activities for designated counties.
  • Evaluate toxic chemical contamination of groundwater and assist in determining the source of contamination.
  • Develop corrective action programs to ensure a safe and potable water supply.
  • Conduct public health-related field investigations, including the collection of water well drilling records and geological data.
  • Coordinate work with various divisions of EGLE responsible for water pollution control and abatement.
  • Act as a statewide lab liaison to facilitate communication between the contamination investigation program and local health departments.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, engineering, environmental studies, physical sciences, resource development, or resource management.
  • At least one year of professional experience equivalent to an Environmental Quality Analyst 9 for the 10 level.
  • At least two years of professional experience equivalent to an Environmental Quality Analyst for the P11 level.
  • At least three years of professional experience equivalent to an Environmental Quality Analyst for the 12 level.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in environmental health and/or drinking water programs in Michigan.
  • Knowledge of water well drilling, construction, and abandonment.
